John Van Elk

I attended Thomas Cooley Law School, graduating in 1994.  Prior to graduation, I was the assistant editor of the Law Review for two terms and I worked as a law clerk for Church, Kritselis, Wyble & Robinson, P.C.

After law school, I worked as a legal intern for the Kalamazoo County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office, gaining invaluable knowledge of the criminal justice system.

In 1995, I joined the Chapter 13 Trustee’s office as Staff Attorney, working there for a total of ten years.  During my tenure I worked with thousands of Chapter 13 debtors, helping guide them and their attorneys to successful plan completion.

In 2005 I was presented the opportunity of joining Russ DeMott in private practice and DeMott & Van Elk, P.C. was formed.  Since that time I have filed over 500 successful bankruptcy petitions and have defended numerous adversary proceedings.  I also work in State Court with divorce, custody, criminal law, and collections cases.

I am admitted to the Michigan Bar and the Federal District Court for the Western District of Michigan.

I am also a member of the American Bankruptcy Institute, Nation Association of Consumer Bankruptcy Attorneys, and am the current Secretary/Treasurer of the Allegan County Bar Association.
